Fruits are like people: They come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, colors, and styles, and each has its own temperament. Some are so sweet you can barely stand it, others so bitter you avoid them at all costs. But regardless of their individual qualities, all fruits have something to offer and deserve our utmost respect. That said, my favorites are red fruits. While there are studies linking nearly every kind of fruit to some sort of health benefit, the most evidence tends to pile up around fruits that are red or reddish, like purple or orange fruits. For example, a study in the journal Metabolism found that eating half a red grapefruit before a meal may help reduce visceral fat and lower cholesterol levels. Another study found that tart cherries reduce belly fat; blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries have also been linked to lower abdominal fat accumulation. So while a number of different fruits will show up in Zero Belly Smoothies, expect many of your smoothies from this chapter to have a cool red or purple hue. That’s a sign that you’re getting a massive hit of antioxidants and fat- fighting fiber. All recipes make one serving. Pink Lady apples are among the most nutrient- rich varieties, according to a study at the University of Western Australia. This smoothie combines the apple with vanilla and cinnamon flavors to give you a uniquely autumnal fruit drink. Unless it’s August and the peaches in your neck of the woods are perfect, opt for frozen peaches instead. The vanilla in the protein powder will combine with the peaches for a bright, warm, and hearty drink. But use fresh ginger: Chances are you bought that powdered ginger in your cabinet three years ago when you made a pumpkin pie, and it’s been losing potency ever since. To keep fresh ginger on hand, break it into small chunks and freeze it, then allow to defrost before grating. In a recent study, two groups followed nearly identical diet and exercise regimens; however, one of the groups was fed unsalted pistachios, while the other group was not. Surprisingly enough, the pistachio group members lost more belly chub and showed better improvements in their blood glucose and cholesterol levels than the control group participants. Don’t underestimate the healing powers of dark chocolate—it’s not there as a gimmick. When you combine fruit and dark chocolate (at least 7. Juicing has been an insanely hot nutritional trend ever since Beyonc. First, most commercial juices use apple juice, which is a high- sugar, low- nutrient base. And third, juices lack fat and protein; without these crucial elements, you’re getting no fat- burning, metabolism- boosting benefits. Next time you want to drink your veggies, blend up one of these seriously nutritious recipes from the book Zero Belly Smoothies. All recipes make one serving. Putting lemon in your blender is like taking out a nutrition insurance policy for your smoothie. That’s because a significant percentage of the antioxidant polyphenols in any food or drink break down before they reach your bloodstream. But researchers at Purdue University discovered that adding lemon juice to the equation helped preserve the polyphenols. Combine it with superheroes like watercress and chia and you’ve got a mighty fat- fighting drink. Weight- loss has never been more delicious than with Zero Belly Smoothies! Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common condition among children and adolescents, and has been diagnosed with increased frequency in.Dietary Recommendations for Children and Adolescents. Abstract. Since the American Heart Association last presented nutrition guidelines for children, significant changes have occurred in the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and nutrition behaviors in children. Overweight has increased, whereas saturated fat and cholesterol intake have decreased, at least as percentage of total caloric intake. Better understanding of children’s cardiovascular risk status and current diet is available from national survey data. New research on the efficacy of diet intervention in children has been published. Also, increasing attention has been paid to the importance of nutrition early in life, including the fetal milieu. This scientific statement summarizes current available information on cardiovascular nutrition in children and makes recommendations for both primordial and primary prevention of cardiovascular disease beginning at a young age. It is estimated that 7. The atherosclerotic process begins in youth, culminating in the risk factor–related development of vascular plaque in the third and fourth decades of life. Good nutrition, a physically active lifestyle, and absence of tobacco use contribute to lower risk prevalence and either delay or prevent the onset of cardiovascular disease. These observations have established the concept of prevention of the development of cardiovascular risk factors in the first place, now called primordial prevention. Education, with the support of the healthcare community, combined with health policy and environmental change to support optimal nutrition and physical activity, are central to this health strategy. This document provides dietary and physical activity recommendations for healthy children; discusses the current content of children’s diets; reviews the adverse health consequences of increased intakes of calories (relative to energy expenditure), saturated and trans fat, and cholesterol; and provides age- specific guidelines for implementation of the recommended diet, including the period from before birth to 2 years of age. Medical practitioners are the intended audience, and guidelines to implement recommendations in clinical practice settings are provided. Public health strategies for improving the quality of children’s diets are also discussed. This scientific statement on optimal cardiovascular nutrition for infants, children, and adolescents revises the 1. This revision responds to the obesity epidemic that has emerged since the publication of the last statement that addressed children’s nutrition from the American Heart Association (AHA) and has new focuses on both total caloric intake and eating behaviors. This revision strongly conveys the message that foods and beverages that fulfill nutritional requirements are appropriate for growing and developing infants, children, and adolescents. Calorie- dense foods and beverages with minimal nutritional content must return to their role as occasional discretionary items in an otherwise balanced diet. A critical component of contemporary guidelines is the strength of the scientific evidence base for recommendations. Whereas the scientific base for understanding the potential harm and benefit of current dietary practices and the relationship to risk factors is strong, the scientific base for recommended interventions is weaker for several reasons: limited number, statistical power, and scope of intervention studies; limited efficacy of attempted interventions; and lack of generalizability of studies of feeding behaviors at younger ages. Historically, most have had small sample size and have not had ethnic diversity among participants. Nonetheless, given the current obesity epidemic, sufficient natural history and prevalence data exist to justify intervention, although continued evaluation is necessary to identify optimal strategies. Dietary Recommendations. The general dietary recommendations of the AHA for those aged 2 years and older stress a diet that primarily relies on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low- fat and nonfat dairy products, beans, fish, and lean meat. These general recommendations echo other recent public health dietary guidelines in emphasizing low intakes of saturated and trans fat, cholesterol, and added sugar and salt; energy intake and physical activity appropriate for the maintenance of a normal weight for height; and adequate intake of micronutrients. Tables 1 and 2. The recently published Dietary Guidelines for Americans (for those 2 years of age and older) and American Academy of Pediatrics Nutrition Handbook provide important supporting reference information with regard to overall diet composition, appropriate caloric intakes at different ages, macronutrients, micronutrients, portion size, and food choices. Table 3 provides daily estimated calorie and serving recommendations for grains, fruits, vegetables, and milk/dairy products by age and gender. Consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2. For youth 3 years of age and older, calorie estimates are based on a sedentary lifestyle. More physically active children and adolescents will require additional calories. This table is provided as a starting point for dietary counseling; recommendations will need to be individualized in clinical practice. Table 4 provides daily recommended intakes of sodium, potassium, and fiber. More complete guidelines for infants, particularly with regard to the transition from breast/formula- feeding to table foods, will be discussed below. AHA Pediatric Dietary Strategies for Individuals Aged > 2 Years: Recommendations to All Patients and Families. TABLE 2. Tips for Parents to Implement AHA Pediatric Dietary Guidelines. TABLE 3. Daily Estimated Calories and Recommended Servings for Grains, Fruits, Vegetables, and Milk/Dairy by Age and Gender. TABLE 4. Daily Recommended Intakes of Fiber, Sodium, and Potassium by Age and Gender. Emphases different from the past include the allowance of a more liberal intake of unsaturated fat and a focus on ensuring adequate intakes of omega- 3 fatty acids. There is an emphasis on foods that are rich in nutrients and that provide increased amounts of dietary fiber. The AHA continues to recommend diets low in saturated and trans fats. Healthy foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, low- fat dairy products, fish, poultry, and lean meats. Fruits, vegetables, and fish are often inadequately consumed by children and adolescents. Because the major sources of saturated fat and cholesterol in children’s diets are full- fat milk and cheese and fatty meats, use of low- fat dairy products and lean cuts of meat in appropriate portion sizes will be critical in meeting dietary needs and nutrient requirements. Fish is an important food with growing evidence of potential benefit. However, consumers may have difficulty in distinguishing among several health messages about fish consumption. Although strong data associate cardiovascular disease prevention with increased fish consumption, there are also concerns about potential polycarbonate phenols (PCBs) and mercury contamination. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and AHA stress that seafood is an important part of a healthy diet and advocate consumption of a wide variety of fish and shellfish. Current FDA recommendations with regard to limiting fish intake pertain to women who may become pregnant or are already pregnant, nursing mothers, and young children. The FDA recommends that people in those categories avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish because they contain high levels of mercury. Five of the most commonly eaten varieties of fish are low in mercury (shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollack, and catfish). The AHA continues to recommend 2 servings of fish weekly. Recent evidence suggests that commercially fried fish products, likely because they are relatively low in omega- 3 fatty acids and high in trans fatty acids (if hydrogenated fat is used for preparation), do not provide the same benefits as other sources of fish. Discretionary Calories. The obesity epidemic has prioritized consideration of the complex issue of matching appropriate energy intake to energy expenditure. One approach is the concept of discretionary calories illustrated in Figure 1. Total caloric intake is the sum of essential calories, the total energy intake necessary to meet recommended nutrient intakes, and discretionary calories, the additional calories necessary to meet energy demand and for normal growth. The figure shows essential calories and discretionary calories; these increase with age and increasing levels of physical activity. There is a large difference in the discretionary calorie allowance among sedentary, moderately active, and active children, with more physically active children needing more energy from food to maintain normal growth. For young sedentary children, the amount of total energy intake that can come from foods used purely as a source of energy, & 1. With increasing activity, this discretionary calorie amount may increase to 2. The message portrayed by Figure 1 is clear: To be sedentary, have a nutritionally adequate diet, and to avoid excessive caloric intake in contemporary society is difficult. The challenge to healthcare providers and public health professionals is to translate the complex science- based energy balance message from Figure 1 into effective practice and public health policy. Consuming diets that include primarily nutrient- dense forms of the foods listed in Table 3, participating in regular moderate to vigorous physical activity most days of the week for at least 1 hour per day, and limiting video screen time to less than 2 hours per day will help accomplish this goal. Concept of discretionary calories by gender. As daily physical activity increases, more energy is needed for normal growth. For sedentary children, only small amounts of discretionary calories can be consumed before caloric intake becomes excessive. 6 Ways Digestive Problems Could Be Totally Screwing With Your Weight. A: Enalapril is one of the first line medications that is used for primary hypertension or high blood pressure. If that is the case, your physician may use several other types of medication in order to help reduce your blood pressure, or he or she may increase the dosage of the enalapril. A: Angioedema is an uncommon side effect with enalapril and usually occurs in the first month of treatment. Although it is possible to have this condition occur later in treatment, it is more common in African- American patients, women and people who have a history of drug or seasonal allergies. The exact prevalence and incidence of ARB- induced angioedema are not known, but are thought to be significantly lower than the ACE inhibitors. For patients who cannot take any other alternatives, ARBs seem the way to go for people who have had this issue with ACE inhibitors, although careful monitoring is recommended for the physician. There are no clear cut ways to distinguish which medication would be best in this case for your condition, but it has been shown that losartan (Cozaar) seems to show the most cases with angioedema, if it happens at all, with the ARBs. I can only take ACE inhibitors and ARBs to lower my blood pressure because of other medical conditions, including CHF. Should I switch to another ACE inhibitor? My blood pressure is around 1. I take enalapril only, and I was supposed to have a second medication, but which one should I take? I've had trouble with some of the others including clonidine, nifedipine, Norvasc, metoprolol and propanolol, and they all had to be stopped. A: Angioedema is an uncommon side effect associated with enalapril and usually occurs in the first month of treatment. Although it is possible to experience this condition later during treatment, it is more common in African American patients, women, and people who have a history of drug or seasonal allergies. The exact prevalence and incidence of ARB- induced angioedema are not known, but it is thought to be significantly lower than the ACE inhibitors. For patients who cannot take any other alternatives, ARBs seem to be the way to go for people who have had this issue with ACE inhibitors, although careful monitoring is recommended for the physician. There are no clear cut ways to distinguish which medication would be best in this case for your condition, but it has been shown that losartan (Cozaar) seems to show the most cases with angioedema, if it happens at all, with the ARBs. Lori Poulin, Pharm. DQ: I started taking Enalapril 1. But I am feeling kind of dizzy and I have blurry eyes. What can I do? A: Enalapril (Vasotec) is an ACE inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure and other heart conditions. Whenever starting a new blood pressure medication you may notice some dizziness especially upon standing. Be sure to stand slowly. If lying down first sit and then slowly stand when getting up. This should improve as your body gets used to having a lower blood pressure. If the dizziness is severe or does not get better, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider. Blood pressure could drop too low and a lower dose of Enalapril (Vasotec) may be necessary. Blurry eyes may be related to the dizziness, if not be sure to tell your healthcare provider. Please see the following Everyday Health link for more information on Enalapril (Vasotec). It is important to take enalapril at the same time every day consistently. Enalapril is in a group of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Enalapril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), congestive heart failure, kidney problems caused by diabetes, and to improve survival after a heart attack. The most common side effects of enalapril are diarrhea, dizziness or lightheadedness when sitting up or standing, headache, nausea, persistent dry cough, tiredness, and vomiting. Burton Dunaway, Pharm. DQ: What high blood pressure medication can I take that will not cause weight gain? I take enalapril and have gained 3. I have pre- diabetes and also take hydrochlorothiazide when needed. A: Typically, medications used to treat high blood pressure do not cause gradual weight gain as a side effect. If weight gain is an issue, it may be due to fluid retention and should be discussed with your physician. Your physician can evaluate your health conditions and medications and make any necessary changes to your treatment regimen. Azotemia - Managing Side Effects. Chemocare. com. Read the recipe for delicious, refined sugar free healthy gingerbread men, ideal for when you're trying to lose baby weight and follow a healthy eating plan.Cholineby Jack Norris, RD . Eating a well- balanced vegan diet with plenty of whole foods should ensure you are getting enough choline. Soymilk, tofu, quinoa, and broccoli are particularly rich sources. The Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) for choline is 5.
It is based on only one study comparing those amounts to 5. Eating less than 5. Some people have genetic mutations that increase the need for choline; it is not clear how much choline such people need but the DRI is probably adequate for almost everyone. If you suspect any sort of liver dysfunction, it might be worth talking to your physician about boosting your choline intake or supplementing with it in moderate amounts. The data on choline and chronic disease (cardiovascular disease, dementia, and cancer) is somewhat mixed. Ideal amounts appear to be about 3. Most vegans probably get about that much from the foods they eat. Vegan women who are considering getting pregnant should make sure they are meeting the DRI for choline to reduce the risk of neural tube defects, and might need a modest supplement. Introduction. The Food and Nutrition Board, of the Institute of Medicine, considers choline to be an essential nutrient (i. Choline can appear in food in many forms, including as just choline (also known as free choline), phosphatidylcholine (also known as lecithin), sphingomyelin, glycerophosphocholine, and phosphocholine). Choline is found in a wide range of foods, although animal products tend to be the richest sources. There is another molecule, betaine, that is involved in the choline story. The body can turn choline into betaine, and betaine is also found in range of foods. Getting plenty of betaine in your diet can somewhat reduce the need for choline. Choline has a number of functions: Most choline is used for the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, the principle phospholipid in cell membranes (1. Along with betaine, choline functions as a methyl donor. Like many other molecules including folate, vitamin B1. SAMe), methyl donors are involved in keeping homocysteine levels low, among many other functions. Choline is needed to synthesize low- density lipoproteins (LDL). Choline is needed to synthesize the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. The need for choline was discovered when it was found that people on total parenteral nutrition (being fed through a catheter directly into the blood and bypassing digestion) for long periods of time were developing fatty livers. The fatty livers resolved upon adding choline to the feeding regimen (2, 3, 4). The fatty livers were caused by an accumulation of triglycerides as a result of the liver's inability to synthesize and release very- low- density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles because of a reduced synthesis of phosphatidylcholine (1. Table 1. DRI for Choline. Age. Female(mg)Male(mg)0- 6 mos. There was not enough evidence to create a Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), but based on the only study available at the time, a 1. University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill, that had purposefully induced choline deficiency in humans (2. IOM created an Adequate Intake (AI) of 5. Average Choline Intakes. There has been little data on average choline intakes in the population because the choline content of foods has not been included in major nutrient databases until recently. In 2. 00. 4, the USDA added choline to their database for about 1. Using this information, in 2. UNC Chapel Hill determined the average choline intake of 1. Daily total choline intake per kg of body weight was 8. These amounts were 1. AI, or about 6. 60 mg for men and 4. From this survey, it appeared that people were generally meeting the AI. In 2. 00. 8, the USDA added significantly more data on the choline content of foods, and it is likely that earlier analyses somewhat underestimated choline intakes. Induced Choline Deficiency. Since the 1. 99. 1 study mentioned above, five more studies inducing choline deficiency have come out of UNC Chapel Hill (8, 1. They all follow a very similar pattern. Subjects are fed a diet with plenty of choline for a short period after which they are given a diet of about 5. The markers include increased liver enzymes, a fatty liver, or elevated creatine phosphokinase (CPK) (8) which indicates muscle deterioration. In all studies, a large proportion of subjects develop markers of dysfunction during the six weeks, indicating that few people can stay healthy on < 5. They found some differences between groups: Premenopausal women develop choline deficiency- associated organ dysfunction at a rate of about 5. There are a number of genetic variations among people that increase or decrease the likelihood of getting choline deficiency. Estrogen protects against the effects of at least one of these genes (over a six week period, anyway) (9, 1. After inducing choline deficiency, the researchers put the subjects on diets that included the DRI for choline and almost all the subjects' organ dysfunction returned to normal. It should be noted that the organ dysfunction did not present itself to the subjects in any noticeable way. Unfortunately, by returning the subjects to the DRI for choline, there was no way to know if less choline was required to arrest the organ dysfunction. There was one exception in which 1. CPK to normal in four men studied (8). So, 1. 38 mg/7. 0 kg of body weight per day might be enough choline, but the problems with drawing conclusions from this study are the small number of people measured, that they were only men, and that liver dysfunction wasn't measured. In another study, a whopping 8. Looking at the research above, it is hard to know how much choline people need. It could be as little as 1. But there is more to the story than just preventing liver and muscle dysfunction. Choline intake or levels have also been studied in relation to heart disease, cancer, neural tube defects, and dementia, with some interesting findings. Heart Disease. A 2. UNC, Chapel Hill study, the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study, followed subjects for 1. They found no significant associations between choline intake and heart disease events. Intake categories ranged from about 3. A 2. 00. 6 cross- sectional report from the Framingham Offspring Study of 9. Higher intakes, above 3. A 2. 00. 8 report from a Dutch arm of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) found that high choline (3. However, there was no association with cardiovascular disease. A 2. 00. 8 cross- sectional study from Greece found that those with choline intakes > 3. C- reactive protein, interleukin- 6, and tumor necrosis factor), than those eating < 2. Betaine intakes of > 3. Plasma was taken from stable patients undergoing an elective heart evaluation who subsequently experienced a heart attack, stroke or death over the ensuing three- year period. Their plasma was compared to age- and gender- matched subjects who did not suffer such problems. They analyzed the plasma for any molecules that might be different between the groups. They found 1. 8 molecules that were higher in the cases, and of those 1. N- oxide (TMAO). They then determined that, at least in mice, TMAO is a byproduct of gut microbe metabolism of choline and betaine. The pathway goes like this: Phosphatidylcholine is turned into choline. Microbes turn the choline into the gas, trimethylamine (TMA). The liver then turns TMA into TMAO. The researchers then looked at levels of choline, betaine, and TMAO in members of the ongoing study, the Learning and Validation Cohorts, and found that all three molecules showed a dose- dependent association with the presence of cardiovascular disease. The association held true after adjustments for traditional cardiac risk factors and medication usage. Update: In 2. 01. Cleveland Clinic showed that humans given lecithin from eggs increase TMAO production (2. They also prospectively followed patients undergoing elective coronary angiography and found that higher TMAO levels in the blood were associated with an increase in major adverse cardiac events. As an aside, some people have defects in the enzymes for converting TMA to TMAO, and TMA accumulates in their system and produces a fishy odor (know as trimethylaminuria). The authors noted that, . Average intake in each quintile was 2. A 2. 00. 9 case- control study from the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project found that higher free choline intakes were associated with a lower risk of developing breast cancer (2. Following the breast cancer cases forward showed that higher betaine, phosphocholine, and free choline intakes were associated with reduced all- cause and breast cancer mortality in a dose- dependent fashion. This study was mostly a re- analysis of the same study published the year before (2. USDA nutrient data regarding the choline content of food. The lowest and highest quintiles of choline Intake were . A choline intake of 3. Results were adjusted for energy intake, alcohol, folate, fiber, calcium, and red meat. In the same study, betaine was associated with a lower risk of colon cancer. A 2. 01. 0 report from the Health Professionals Follow- up Study found that after 1. The choline amounts were not given. Prostate Cancer. A 2. Northern Sweden Health and Disease Cohort analyzed plasma concentrations of betaine, choline, cysteine, methionine, methylmalonic acid (MMA), vitamin B2, and vitamin B6 in 5. Elevated MMA levels indicate vitamin B1. The relative risks for a doubling in concentration were 1. B2, and 0. 7. 8 (9. MMA. In other words, choline, vitamin B2, and vitamin B1. Neural Tube Defects. In 2. 00. 4, a case control study on neural tube defects (NTD) was reported from the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program (2. There is a concern that because choline is involved in some of the same metabolic pathways as folate, choline deficiency in pregnant women, along with folate deficiency, might be a risk for a NTD. In this study, there were 4. NTD and 4. 40 controls. Quartiles of choline intake were . Top 1. 0 Ways to Lose 2. Pounds. Ways to Lose 2. Pounds. Millions of people suffer from the effects of Candida overgrowth that result in or complicate a wide range of conditions and symptoms. Some of the most common include yeast infections (thrush), vaginitis, irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, weight gain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and depression. Since the symptoms of Candida overgrowth, also known as Candidiasis, mimic many other diseases and conditions, it can be tough to tell for sure if this one- celled fungus is the culprit.
